Oh em gee – heart.

The new toy. This is a 2013 GTI with the “Sunroof and Nav” package, 6-Speed DSG auto transmission with Tiptronic, 4-door, Interlagos cloth interior in…Deep Brilliant Black…of course. This car was not randomly chosen. I specifically wanted this configuration.

For me, this is all the daily driver that I need. Actually the “Sunroof and Nav” package is more than I need but I had to upgrade to the higher optioned model to get what I really-really-really wanted which was those damn sexy headlights. This model comes with the Xenon headlamps with AFS (adaptive front lighting system – self level and turn with the wheel) and LED DRL (daytime running lights). I can’t explain it but I see the stacked LEDs of the DRLs on the street…it’s just completely unique. So I had to have them and paid more but got the touchscreen nav/radio and sunroof which I am already appreciating.

And the color…I was pretty much set on Black but two things caused me to hesitate 1. the GTI only comes in metallic black and 2. the Carbon Steel Grey is extremely nice. Also, CSG seems to be more common – at least in my neck of the woods. I wanted to see CSG again without going to the dealership so I went to the Target parking lot instead and sure enough saw a Driver’s Edition.

I wanted to own at least one black car in my lifetime. The “full-time” aspect of maintaing a black car does not bother. The daily drivers get hand-washed weekly and I’ve already done the white, silver and grey cars. In looking at the car…black was the right choice, for me, by a long shot.

Also, the cloth plaid interior was a no-braniner for me for its all-weather comfort and tribute to the early GTIs. It reminds me the houndstooth interiors of the old Porsches…just something unique and associated with the model.

The above is a reference to the cosmetics because I feel that mechanically I am already familiar with the car since it shares the same 2.0 Turbo engine as our recently pre-owned 2008 Audi TT which is an absolute blast to drive – very similar but more “utilitarian”.

I do need to thank Nick McClintock, Sales Specialist, from Dorito Brothers VW of Walnut Creek. He was extremely outstanding to deal with throughout the process and absolutely delivered in the end. I would highly recommend him if you are in the market for a new VW – 510.909.6777.

I know that my wife and I are going to enjoy the car for many years to come!

Congrats. The best down-to-earth daily driver one can buy today.

  4. Excellent buy, Bob — congratulations. But but but: from one (former) GTI owner to another, please don’t call it either an auto or a Tiptronic! DSG is neither 🙂 That may strike some as pedantic, but if anyone could appreciate pedantry, I think it’d be you (which I say as a compliment).

    Thanks guys!

    Already enjoying it!

Interesting MCB. I listed that info directly from the window sticker description but will keep that in mind. Also, thanks – I remember you had a black one as well awhile back.

  6. I chalk that one up to Volkswagen of America (or more accurately, its network of dealers) operating under the (false) assumption that if it doesn’t say “auto,” it’ll scare off most American buyers.

That may very well be true for the majority of cars, but not for the GTI I think.

The black sets off the red accents a lot more. I like it!

I just recently sold my 2010 GTI and loved it. Funnily enough in Canada, all GTIs come with the Xenons and AFS and I was spoiled by them. Mine was a low spec car – 4 door and the only option was rear side airbags. Loved that cloth interior.

You’ll have to get an APR 91 octane flash for the car. It really wakes it up.

Thanks Chet. Black was such the right choice for me. I think I will only own black cars from here on out. May have to paint the ’68 Black.

Keith – learning so much about what can be done with these cars. I’ll have to read up on the flash.

  10. I’ll second that recommendation. Easiest 255 hp and 294 lb-ft of torque you’ll ever see.

Thanks MCB. I have to figure out how far down the tuning path I want to go. Is tinting windows tuning? 😉

  12. I’d probably add that ECU reflash, an aftermarket exhaust for a sportier noise, then call it a day — these cars are very good right out of the box. Tint is a personal preference but I myself prefer untinted glass.
